Ingredients
Scale
- 3 granny smith apples
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- a pinch of nutmeg
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons brown sugar
- 12 ounces pound cake
- 8 ounces cool whip
- 6 tablespoons caramel sauce
Instructions
- Peel and chop the apples into small cubes and place them in a medium saucepan.
- Add lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar to the apples, then stir to combine.
- Simmer the mixture over medium heat for about 10 minutes until the apples soften and sugar transforms into a syrup. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Cut the pound cake into bite-sized cubes.
- Fill a piping bag (or zip-top bag with a snipped corner) with Cool Whip.
- Layer the trifle in serving glasses or jars, starting with a layer of pound cake cubes, then add a layer of the apple mixture, followed by caramel sauce, and a layer of Cool Whip.
- Repeat the layering process one more time, finishing with a drizzle of caramel on top. Serve immediately or refrigerate.
Notes
For added flavor, consider using different types of apples or a flavored cake.
Drizzling extra caramel sauce on top right before serving enhances its appeal.
These trifle layers can be made in advance but are best served the same day.
